Hwa Tai Industries Berhad

May 26, 2020

Hwa Tai Industries Berhad is a long established quality biscuit manufacturer in Malaysia. The company’s trademark brands “Hwa Tai” and “Luxury” are popular among Malaysians. They are found locally from small sundry shops to big hypermarkets, convenience stores, and even airlines. 40% of the biscuits produced are exported to more than 28 countries. The founder of Hwa Tai, Tan Hwa Teck, started the family business in 1962 and over 30 years grew it big enough for listing in 1992 on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange then (now Bursa Securities Malaysia). Four years later, Tan sold it and retired. The company changed ownership a few times and today is controlled by senior advocate and solicitor, Soo Thien Ming. His son, Soo Chung Yee, is the Group CEO of Hwa Tai Industries group since August 2004.

Note that Tan Hwa Teck’s sons started Munchy Food Industries Sdn Bhd and sold off their stake to Global PE Fund, CVC Capital in June 2018.
