Dr. Fong Swee Kiang and Teh Chee Hak, both First Class Honours graduates from local universities, have given us a reason to shout Malaysia Boleh. Investors' optimism was evident when the IPO of Skyechip Berhad, a semiconductor integrated circuit (IC) design company founded by Fong and Teh, was oversubscribed (public portion) by 95.03 times. There was no offer for sale by existing shareholders. Fong and Teh did not cash out. Listing is set for 20th May 2026. Penang based Skyechip has over 300 engineers who bring a combined 50+ years of semiconductor industry technical and management experience. In March 2025 Asian Venture Capital firm, Gobi Partners, invested an undisclosed sum in Skyechip to support further talent acquisition and business expansion. Skyechip specialises in Intellectual Property and IC solutions for use in AI and high performing computing applications.
Dr. Fong worked with Intel for more than 20 years in the US and Malaysia. He was instrumental in starting up Intel Design Center in Malaysia and growing the organization to 1500 people responsible for microprocessor, Chipset, SOC design and development. He then joined Altera Corporation as VP of R&D, leading the development of advanced FPGA, IP and Quartus software in Malaysia. He was the senior director of Broadcom Corporation overseeing the global operation of a USD1B division before starting up SkyeChip. Fong holds a First Class BSEE degree from University of Technology Malaysia. He earned his EMBA degree ( Beta Gamma Sigma) from Olin School of Business WUSTL, Missouri.
Teh spent 12 years at Intel before embarking on his FPGA journey with Altera/Intel as a Principal Engineer and the Chief Architect for Altera/Interl's FPGA products. He graduated with a BSEE degree (First Class Hons) from USM. He specializes in the system memory hierarchy, 2.5D/3D interconnects and chiplets, computing & heterogeneous acceleration and numerous generations of high-speed parallel and serial interconnect protocols including DDR, PCIe, USB, SATA and FSB among others.
Fong and Teh believe Malaysia has the right calibre of engineering talent for chip design. We just need a much larger pool of engineers.
