Dato' Sri Sulaiman Taib to transform Cahya Mata to global group

The Taib family of the longest serving Chief Minister of Sarawak and Malaysia, Tan Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, controls listed Cahya Mata Sarawak Berhad. Cahya Mata began as Portland Cement manufacturer at Pending Industrial estate in 1974.More than 40 years later, Cahya Mata now has more than 35 companies in its portfolio.
For FYE 31 Dec 2022 the group recorded revenue of RM1.1 billion with Cement manufacturing (RM601.89m) as the biggest contributor to revenue. Cahya Mata is also a major telco company in the State through Sacofa.
At the helm of Cahya Mata is Dato' Sri Sulaiman Abdul Rahman b Abdul Taib, 54, who is Group MD (since 8 July 2021). His brother, Dato Sri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib, 59, is the Deputy Group Chairman. Dato Sri Sulaiman was with Cahya Mata from 1995-2008 before he resigned to take up the post of Deputy Minister of Tourism for the Government of Malaysia (Mar 2008 - Dec 2009). He was a member of Parliament Malaysia (2008 - 2013).
He was also the Executive Chairman of RHB Capital Berhad (2003 - 2006) and Chairman of Rashid Hussain Berhad, RHB Insurance Berhad, and Director on the boards of Sarawak Securities, Malaysian Industry-Government Group for High Technology Sdn Bhd (MIGHT,) Utama Banking Group Berhad, K&N Kenanga Holdings Berhad, Bank Utama (Malaysia) Berhad, Utama Merchant BankBerhad, RHB Islamic Bank Berhad, RHB Sakura Bankers Berhad and RHB Bank Berhad. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from University of San Francisco, California, USA.
Dato Sri Mahmud Abu Bekir was a founding member of Sarawak Securities, the first stockbroking company in the State. It is now under Kenanga Investment Bank of which Cahya Mata has a strategic stake of 18.9%. Kenanga posted revenue of RM723.1m and pre-tax profit of RM74.2m for FYE 2022. Datuk Sri M Abu Bekir is also Chairman of listed Sarawak Cable Berhad.
In 2022 Cahya Mata launched a new logo and a new vision to make the Sarawak based company a global one. It entered the O&G industry by acquiring Scomi Energy Services Bhd’s oilfield operations (spread across 8 countries) for RM21 million in 2022.
