Scientex Berhad

Scientex Berhad is one of the world’s largest producers of stretch film products across the packaging value chain. It ventured into the stretch film business in 1997. Today its Pulau Indah plant which is strategically located within the West Port vicinity is ranked as the world’s largest stretch film facility in a single location. Scientex is a global leader with exports to more than 60 countries and has manufacturing facilities in Malaysia, Vietnam, Myanmar and USA (Phoenix, Arizona). It is also a leading player in strapping bands in Asia and other packaging industrial products such as FIBC bags, form-fill and seal bags, woven bags and raffia products. Since 2013 Scientex has become one of Malaysia’s leading producers of consumer-packaging products, and a mainstay in the manufacture of component parts for automotive interior. 

In August 2019 Scientex completed the RM125.0 million acquisition of Mega Printing & Packaging Sdn Bhd (“Mega”) which saw Mega becoming a fully owned subsidiary of Daibochi Berhad (“Daibochi”), a company it acquired in early 2019. This double acquisition of two reputable companies in the flexible plastic packaging (“FPP") industry has firmly established Scientex as a key domestic and regional player within the sector. 

Building Affordable Homes 

Scientex’s Property Division was first incepted in 1995 in Pasir Gudang, Johor with the vision of providing affordable yet quality homes to house buyers. It has since successfully expanded its presence from Johor and Melaka to Selangor and Perak in the Central Region and Penang in the Northern Region of Peninsular Malaysia. With the demand for affordable homes continuing to increase across major cities and towns in Malaysia, Scientex is leveraging upon our numerous land banks and strong construction expertise to grow our footprint across Peninsular Malaysia. It is one of Malaysia’s leading developers of affordable housing. It has pledged to complete 50,000 units of affordable homes by 2028.  Its property division has so far constructed more than 20,000 units priced below RM500,000 nationwide, of which more than 70% are priced below RM300,000.

Listed on Bursa Malaysia since 1990, Scientex’s revenue reached the RM1 billion mark in 2013 and 3 years later passed the RM2 billion mark in revenue. Its trajectory has been upward since both in terms of revenue and  net profit. For the financial year ended 31 July 2020, Scientex achieved revenues of RM3.5 billion and net profit of RM390.1 million.  

Lim family 

The company was founded by Lim Teck Meng, 82, in 1968 as a manufacturer of PVC sheeting.  Under the stewardship of the founder’s son, Lim Peng Jin, who is CEO of Scientex, the Group aims to double up its growth every 5 years to reach RM10 billion in sales by 2028. Its packaging division accounts for 80% of sales turnover.   

Lim Peng Jin, 53, is currently the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (“MD/CEO") of the Company. He was appointed to the Board on 20 January 1995 as the Group Executive Director and subsequently as Managing Director on 6 November 2001. Lim Peng Jin graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chemical Engineering from the University of Tokyo, Japan in 1990. He began his career in the chemical industry in Japan before joining the Company in 1991. He had also completed a course in Programme Management Development at Harvard University, USA in 1998.

Lim Peng Cheong, 58, is a Non-Executive Director of the Company. He was appointed to the Board as an Executive Director on 9 September 1988, and has held this position until 10 November 2003, when he was re-designated as NonExecutive Director. He is currently the Managing Director of Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd. Lim Peng Cheong graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Business Studies from City University, London, UK in June 1984. He is a major shareholder of Scientex Berhad. 

Substantial Shareholders 

As at 19 October 2020 the Lim brothers, Lim Peng Jin and Lim Peng Cheong are deemed beneficially interested in 55.5% and 52.47% respectively in the issued shares of Scientex Berhad. Another substantial shareholder is TM Lim Sdn Bhd with a stake of 5.10%. Lim Teck Meng (TM Lim) is the founder of Scientex Berhad.
