July 02, 2020

Sushi King is the largest sushi restaurant chain in Malaysia with 100 outlets. Though a homegrown chain in Malaysia, it was founded by Tan Sri Dato Seri Dr Fumihiko Konishi, a Japanese who has made this country his home. He started his first kaiten or conveyor belt sushi outlet in 1995.  This year Sushi King celebrates its 25th Anniversary. Tan Sri Fumihiko is Executive Chairman of Penang based TexChem Resources Bhd which is listed on Bursa Malaysia. TexChem has four business divisions – Restaurants, Industrial, Food and Polymer Engineering.

In 2015  Yoshinoya Holdings Group, one of the top three gyudon or beef bowl fast food restaurant chains in Japan, took a 28% stake in Sushi King. The Yoshinoya Group also owns the Hanamaru Udon chain which specialises in the popular Sanuki udon from Kagawa Prefecture. The first Yoshinoya Hanamaru udon restaurant was opened in the Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur.

Under the Restaurants Division of TexChem Resources, there are two other restaurants and one upscale café - Miraku, a fine dining Japanese restaurant helmed by Japanese chefs flown in from Japan, Raku Ramen, Malaysia’s first ramen concept restaurant chain which was launched in 2011, and upscale café Hoshino Coffee which opened in 2017 at The Boulevard, Mid Valley City, Kuala Lumpur.
