It began with a family banana leaf restaurant in 1988 called the Lotus Family Restaurant at Jalan Gasing, Petaling Jaya. Tan Sri Datuk R. Doraisingam together with his brothers, Datuk R. Ramalingam Pillai and Datuk Nagasundaram Pillai, built up the Lotus Group over more than 30 years into a diversified family business with  

• 22 Lotus restaurants 
• a major distributor of Indian films and owning one of the largest cinema chains in the country under Lotus Five Star (13 outlets with 53 screens),  
• An expanding Lotus Care Premier Assisted Living business with the first custom-designed four-storey aged-care facility in Petaling Jaya (July 2019) 
• The Lotus Desaru Beach Resort & Spa in Desaru, Johor (793 apartment suites) and the Lotus Seaview Beach Resort in Pengerang, Johor 
• Lotus Properties which owns investment properties located in strategic locations for rental and long term purposes 
• An integrated farming project at Thamarai Estate (4,700 acres of former rubber estate land) and  
• Lotus Plantations which owns and operates two estates located in Peninsular Malaysia (Perak and Negeri Sembilan) with a total land bank of 7,000 acres

Karthiik Doraisingam, only son of Tan Sri Datuk Doraisingam, who joined the family business in 2016 as Group Financial Controller, is being groomed for the takeover of the family business. He is current CEO of Lotus Care Premier Assisted Living which he was instrumental in setting up. Karthiik disclosed that 4 more Lotus Care aged-care facilities are being planned in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Malacca and Johor. The Group is also on the look out for more hotel acquisitions. Karthiik graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree (Finance) from De Paul University, Chicago, USA and was asked to return to join his father’s business.
